Natural Conception Life Style Management Assisted Reproductive Technology Weight Management Hormonal Imbalance BMI

Weight management seems like a minor factor to consider, but it can affect natural conception.

In this day and age, infertility – both female and male factor – affects many couples. However, some challenges are easier to overcome than others.

Ideally, one would like to improve a couple’s chances of conceiving naturally, by providing lifestyle management advice and guidance, before turning to assisted reproductive technology.

Weight management is one of the lifestyle factors that can influence natural conception. Once a healthy body weight has been reached and maintained, one can start looking at other factors that may be delaying or hindering conception.

At Bridge Clinic, assistance with weight management falls under Primary Care services.

Hormonal imbalance, caused by additional curves or a larger frame, can disrupt normal ovulation. Fortunately, if 5% to 10% of total body weight is lost, the ovulation cycle should stabilise and chances of pregnancy should increase.

That is why it is important to know and understand your weight status.

Body Mass Index

There is a way to find out if your weight is healthy for your height. Body mass index, or BMI, is a way to determine your weight status by inserting your height and weight in the following formula:

  1. Take your weight in kilogrammes, e.g. 75 kg.
  2. Divide it by the square of your height, e.g. 1.8 m x 1.8 m = 3.24
  3. The result: 75 ÷ 3.24 = 23,15.

BMI Values and Weight Categories:

  • Under 18.5:     Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9:      Normal Weight
  • 25 – 29.9:         Overweight
  • Over 30:           Considered Obese

Higher numbers are usually (but not always) an indication of higher body fat. With a high body fat percentage comes risks such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and infertility.

Note:

  • BMI applies to adult men and women.
  • Age should be taken into consideration.
  • It is a screening and not a diagnostic tool.
