Pathology is a branch of medical science primarily concerned with the examination of organs, tissues, and bodily fluids - blood, saliva, bone, urine for example - in order to diagnose a specific condition or disease.Typically, laboratories will process the samples provided and analyse the results which are given to the patient’s doctor. A general pathologist is a physician who is trained in clinical chemistry, microbiology and haematology and is familiar with all aspects of laboratory analysis.

It is impossible to over emphasise the importance of pathology in modern medicine. It is used in the diagnosis, treatment and management of an increasing range of clinical conditions and studies show that 70-80 percent of all healthcare decisions affecting diagnosis or treatment involve a pathological investigation. Its use is equally significant in the investigation and treatment of male and female infertility. The speed and accuracy of the results produced by the laboratory are crucial in the determination of a correct diagnosis and effective fertility treatment plan.

During infertility investigations, pathology tests are normally undertaken after the patient’s personal history has been recorded and a thorough physical examination has taken place. The tests vary according to each patient’s circumstances. Some of the tests that will be ordered during the investigation include vaginal and cervical pap smear, a full blood count (FBC), semen analysis, follicle-stimulating hormone

Other tests that could be carried out in investigating causes of infertility include oestradiol, Luteinizing hormone levels in women, serum progesterone, prolactin, androgen etc. Some patients require advanced endocrine tests to establish a correct diagnosis and prognosis.

Pathology results help to determine the progress and direction of infertility investigations. The quality of work and the reliability of the results produced by the laboratory are crucial elements in the diagnostic process.
