Having a miscarriage is extremely distressing. Having three or more miscarriages is a terrible experience for the women concerned and for those close to her. She needs all the love and support they can give to help her recover from the desperate disappointment and hopelessness she is feeling. It should be noted right away that recurring pregnancy loss (RPL) is often a natural process and almost two-thirds of women with RPL will eventually have a healthy pregnancy.

Recurring pregnancy loss is when a woman has two or more miscarriages before the pregnancies reach 20 weeks. Losses are classified by the time they occur and are diagnosed by a healthcare provider using an ultrasound. In most cases, a pregnancy can be seen with an ultrasound as early as 5-6 weeks.

Man yearly miscarriages are due to genetic abnormalities in the foetus. There are 46 chromosomes that contain the genes for normal development and early miscarriages can occur because the foetus has an extra chromosome or is missing one. Chromosome abnormalities occur for no known reason in up to 60 percent of first-trimester miscarriages.

Problems connected to the womb can also cause recurring pregnancy loss. These include the shape of the womb, scarring of the cervix, fibroids and benign muscle tumours of the womb. In these cases, surgical intervention may be able to solve the problem. Correcting the shape of the uterus can often lower the probability of miscarriage. It is a one-day procedure during which the surgeon passes an instrument with a camera (hysteroscope) through the vagina to repair the inside of the uterus.

In general, good lifestyle choices improve a woman’s chances of achieving a healthy pregnancy. This includes eating a healthy diet, stopping smoking and limiting alcohol and caffeine intake. There is no proof that stress, anxiety or mild depression cause RPL but they are likely accompaniments. Psychological support and professional counseling can help couples cope with the emotional pain of miscarriage and create a healthy environment for a pregnancy.
